Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) serves the greater Los Angeles area, as well as surrounding areas in Orange County, Long Beach, Riverside County, San Fernando Valley and San Bernardino County. With over 58 million passengers passing through its gates in 2010, LAX remains one of the world’s busiest airports, ranking sixth in the world for number of passengers. Interestingly, the airport also operates as a base for military operations, specifically the U.S. Coast Guard.
Located in the South Bay area in Westchester, LAX is roughly 16 miles from downtown Los Angeles. To reach the airport, take either the 405 or 105 freeways (depending on which direction you’re coming from) and follow the exit signs leading to LAX.
Los Angeles traffic is famously horrible. This is especially true for the 405 freeway, the main artery that leads to LAX, which is currently undergoing major construction. If you are traveling to or from the airport during rush hour in the morning or afternoon, add at least an additional 30 minutes to your travel time to ensure you make your flight on time.
There are plenty of options to get from LAX to other areas in Los Angeles via public transportation. The Metro Green Line Aviation Station and Metro Bus Center provides free shuttle service from the airport to the Metro Bus Center, where passengers can board city buses like the Culver City Bus Lines, Torrance Transit and the Santa Monica Big Blue Bus.
LAX connects to nearly 90 domestic and 70 international destinations and acts as a major hub for a number of air carriers, including United and American Airlines. It’s also a focus city for Southwest, Qantas and Virgin America, plus it serves as a gateway for international flights on Delta. Other airlines flying in and out of LAX include Continental, Northwest, Air France, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, Aeromexico, and All Nippon Airways.
The airport itself is massive, with eight terminals and the Tom Bradley International terminal. Terminal 1 serves Southwest and US Airways, while Terminal 2 is home to a multitude of airlines such as Air New Zealand, Hawaiian Air, KLM, Sun Country, Virgin Atlantic, Volaris and WestJet. Terminal 3 hosts AirTran Airways, JetBlue, Virgin America and Alaska Airlines. Terminal 4 is American Eagle, American Airlines and Qantas, whereas Terminal 5 is solely Delta. Terminal 6 includes air carriers United, Spirit, Great Lakes, Frontier and Continental. Terminals 7 and 8 serve just United Airlines. The Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) is home base for international flight and carriers, such as Air Berlin, Korean Air, British Airways, LAN Airlines, Korean Airlines, China Airlines and Cathay Pacific.Resources/Helpful Links
