On-site JFK airport parking is also available at several different lots. Green, Blue, Yellow, Orange and Red Parking, adjacent to Terminals 1 through 8, denote short term daily parking. Long term parking at JFK is located about four miles away from the terminals on Lefferts Blvd. Those who park in long term parking lots at JFK can ride the AirTrain for free to their terminal.
JFK Airport Guide
John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) serves New York City and parts of New Jersey close to the city. It is one of the busiest airports in the world, serving over 45 million passengers in 2009.
Located on Jamaica Bay in Queens, JFK is about 15 miles away from midtown Manhattan. To reach the airport, take the Queens-Midtown tunnel and head eastbound on the Long Island Expressway. Merge onto the Grand Central Parkway headed east, then merge onto the Van Wyck Expressway going south, which ends at JFK Airport.
Be warned – New York traffic is notoriously horrendous, and if you drive to JFK Airport during the day, you will run into major traffic at certain points, such as through the Midtown Tunnel or the Kew Gardens Interchange. If you are traveling during the day, be sure to add at least 30 minutes to your trip so you will be sure to reach your flight on time.
New York City is also accessible through AirTrain JFK, a high-speed light rail service that runs 24 hours a day and links the airport to Manhattan, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and NYC subway and bus lines. The LIRR train at Penn Station to the Jamaica hub takes about 20 minutes, while all the subways in Manhattan will connect with AirTrain.
Over 70 airlines operate out of JFK, including major domestic airlines like Delta, United, American, JetBlue, US Airways and Virgin America, as well as international air carriers such as Virgin Atlantic, Qantas, Lufthansa, KLM, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, Air France, Aero Mexico, and more. JetBlue uses it as a major international hub, as do American Airlines and Delta.
JFK Airport is a sprawling behemoth of an airport, with eight terminals full of boarding passengers. Terminals 1 and 4 are home to various international airlines. Look for Turkish Airlines, Cayman Airways, China Eastern and Korean Air in Terminal 1, while Emirates, LAN, Singapore, Sun Country and Air Europa are in Terminal 4. Terminals 2 and 3 are dedicated solely to Delta flights, whereas Terminal 5 is all flights from air carrier JetBlue. Terminal 6 is a mix of domestic and international carriers, including United, Iberia, ANA and British Airways. - JFK Airport offers a free Cell Phone Lot located less than five minutes from all terminals for those waiting to pick up passengers coming from arriving flights.
- Another parking alternative is offered at JFK called the Kiss and Fly lot, located at the Lefferts Blvd. AirTrain Station. Passengers can ride AirTrain for free to their terminal within 10 minutes.
- JFK provides Wi-Fi internet access throughout most of the terminals for a fee. Travelers must purchase a daily or monthly plan from Boingo Wireless.
